Vintage Bike Repair

One of the most important parts of owning a vintage bike is being willing to get dirty and put a little bit of work into your bike. If you aren’t willing to properly care for and maintain your bike then having a vintage bicycle probably isn't right for you. A vintage bike can be a great source of fun and entertainment when kept in good shape but to do that you have to know a few things to start out with.

One of the first and most important steps is to find a good source of parts for your vintage bike. If you don’t have the parts the odds of you being able to keep your bike in a good condition are pretty slim because even the best of bikes will wear out over time. Swap meets, garage sales, antique stores, and estate sales are all great place to look for vintage bike parts and you can check online or a local vintage bike stores to see if they have what you need as well.

Knowing your bike is also very important. You can’t just take the general mechanics of any bicycle and apply them to your bike because vintage bikes are unique and delicate and can often be hurt or damaged by an inexperienced bike mechanic thinking that their vintage bike is the same as any other. Remember that bikes where made differently during different eras in history so they all have their own unique needs. Be aware of all your bikes specifications and sizes before you start to do any work on it or buy any parts for it.

Watch out for rust or damaged parts. Don’t just hop on your bicycle right away or begin tinkering with it when you don’t know if they are parts that do or don’t work. Rusty parts, bad tires, and worn brakes can be dangerous to you and can ruin your bicycle if ridden in that condition for too long so be sure to get your bike in proper working condition before taking it out anywhere. It’s also a good idea to protect your bike from future breakdowns or rust problems by spraying it with a rust-proofing coating and routinely checking on and replacing parts that get a lot of wear.

Its also a good idea to do as much research as you can on your vintage bicycle including getting it’s make, model, and year number as this can be a great help to you in the future. Knowing this information about your bike can help you find parts for it more easily, repair it with less difficulty, and it can even help you return your bike to how it looked when it was new by finding the appropriate paint colors, decals, and so on - just be sure not to get any paints that are lead based as these can be harmful and illegal in some areas.

If you’re willing to take the time and do some research you can have a great experience repairing your vintage bike. Just follow the steps above and have fun!
